What it Takes to Have a Great Memory

The older you get, experts will tell you, the worse your memory may be. This could be the result of how you treat your mind. Challenging your mind with simple tests given at regular intervals could help it remain sharp as the years go by. The ability to remember things can sometimes impress neighbors and colleagues, especially if your abilities are far greater than most people’s. Regardless of what you are interested in learning how to do, the following memory strategies will help you reach your goals.

Do you live in a cluttered home? If you do, it might be impeding the ability of your memory. Your environment can also play a large role in whether or not you remember things. For example, many people misplace common objects such as their reading glasses or car keys. If your house is cluttered, it’s much harder to find anything than if it’s neat and well organized. When you remember where things are around you, it is a form of mental exercise that can help you. This is true of your computer as well. If you have hundreds of files cluttering your desktop, it will be hard to remember where anything is. If you can just organize the space where you live, this organization will help you dramatically.

It is important for everyone to relax from time to time, a technique that will help you and your memory. Your memory will not become photographic, but you will see a dramatic improvement by just relaxing. If you can relax, or learn how to do so, you will see a dramatic improvement in how much you remember. The more relaxed that you are, the more your mind is able to absorb information. Cortisol, a stress hormone, can negatively affect the way you remember things as it adversely affects the brain. A technique that has been used for centuries is to focus on your breath – doing so helps you to defocus on what is making you stressed. Thus, by relaxing your body by taking deep breaths that you focus on, your mind will function much more optimally.

Some ways to help your memory are biological in nature, such as making sure you’re sending enough oxygen to your brain. When you don’t get enough exercise, it’s not good for memory (not to mention your body). Strenuous activities such as running, swimming or lifting weights are helpful to your brain as well as your heart and muscles. You may notice that when you exercise vigorously, you not only feel better physically, but your head also feels clearer. When your brain gets oxygenated, it will certainly help your memory and overall intellectual functioning. It’s worthwhile on many levels to exercise consistently, even if it’s just for a short time. Any type of information can be remembered by using the above memory training tips. When you start checking out the methods for improving your memory, there are a lot of them you will find that work. To strengthen your memory, the first step in the process is setting your intention. Then it’s just a matter of consistently practicing a few methods that appeal to you.
