Computers and Technology

Do you use the Windows operating system? If so, do you use all the shortcuts and other features that it has to offer? If you use Windows, but your version is earlier than Windows 7, the shortcuts we talk about here should still work for you. You can easily learn some tricks from Windows that will make your PC run faster and the performance of your tasks more convenient.

There are people who hate using a mouse and swear keyboard shortcuts are faster, and there are also others who can never remember keyboard shortcuts and love their mouse. Well, whichever method you prefer, you can still benefit by learning some useful keyboard shortcuts. There are a lot of different things you can do with your keyboard to make your tasks easier; however, most computer owners only learn a few of the shortcuts their keyboard offers. Do some reading about your version of Windows and you will come up with a significant number of commands and useful functions. Do you like to view your pictures full screen? Press the Windows key and the UP arrow key and your screen will be maximized. To minimize the screen, you’d press Windows and the Down arrow. A helpful key sequence to remember, if you want to preview a file before you open it, is ALT + P. A feature like this is really convenient for previewing images, videos, as well as your text files. These two shortcuts can give you an idea of the functionality of using the many keyboard shortcuts that are available.

It doesn’t hurt to have a spare copy of your Windows operating system in the event it needs reinstalled.

An easy way to do this is to load Windows onto a USB drive so you can have a copy of it with you if you ever need it. Take good care of this copy, whether you keep it at home or take it wherever you go. It gives you the added peace of mind of knowing you can install Windows again if something goes amiss. Using flash memory is much faster than installing the operating system from a disk or the internet.

If you have a laptop or notebook computer, you may wish that the battery would last longer. Windows 7 allows you to run an Energy Report which gives you information on how to make your battery charge last longer. It’s not hard to generate this Energy Report. Open the Start menu and type CMD in the search box; right click on the command prompt that appears at the top and select ‘Run as Administrator.’ The next screen with be a familiar DOS screen. When the DOS screen appears, type ‘powercfg -ENERGY (leave off the quotes) at the DOS prompt and hit Enter. This command will ask your PC to generate a report that will tell you how you can save energy and improve the length of your battery’s charge. If the analysis of your PC shows that there are upgrades or drivers that would help it run more efficiently, it will also tell you about them. If you do as the report recommends, you should be able to increase your battery’s life.

Good logic dictates that you use Windows to your fullest advantage. The above are just a few helpful tips that can make Windows run more efficiently. Your reasons for using a computer are as unique as you are, and you can make your daily work easier and more efficient by learning more shortcuts. Once you open your mind to learning new ways of using Windows, you’ll find there are many possibilities.
